Positive Reforms
With the advancement of technology, the United States adopted the strategy of attacking at night (1st 1-2). On May 5, 1971, the 1st Cavalry Division was renamed the Triple Capability Division (TRICAP). Then in January 1975, TRICAP reverted to the 1st Cavalry Division. |
“This TRICAP designation stemmed from its organization, consisting of an armored brigade, and mechanized infantry brigade, an airmobile brigade, and support troops tailored to assist the combat elements of the division.” -1st Cavalry Division “First Team” |
Negative Reforms
In mid-1969, North Vietnamese forces copied the strategy of night missions to counter-act the United States night force (Berry 99).
|
“Nighttime had become the enemy’s favorite time for attacks, largely because of the protection the darkness offered against air strikes.”
-F. Clifton Berry, Jr., officer in the 82d Airborne Division |
Because helicopters suffered from many disadvantages, manufacturers sought ways to incorporate the traits of airplanes and helicopters (Day 3).
