Conclusion
Progression throughout the war resulted in the improvement of the helicopter, prompting both positive and negative reactions, along with reforms. The use of airmobile warfare, showed a new strategy of using helicopters to attack, rescue, and transport. These machines changed the outcome of the war by saving lives and restructuring the air war. Ultimately, the new fighting strategies and improved maneuverability, allowed helicopters to be one of the most sought after “weapons” in the Vietnam War. The war in Southeast Asia was the coming of age for helicopters, proving its ability and worthiness to fight for America’s home front.
“The ubiquitous medevac helicopter became almost an emblem of the Vietnam conflict. In a war long on frustration and short on popular heroes, the dust-off pilots became almost legendary for their courage, tenacity, and ingenuity.”
